Chef's Note
For extra flavor, you can add a splash of red wine to the sauce while it simmers. If you prefer a smoother sauce, let it cool slightly and pulse in a blender before mixing with the pasta.

Ingredients
4 oz lean ground beef
2 oz whole wheat spaghetti
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1/4 cup onion
1 clove garlic
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp grated parmesan cheese
1 tsp olive oil
Instructions
- 1
Fill a medium pot with water and bring to a boil for the pasta.
- 2
While waiting for the water to boil, finely dice 1/4 cup of onion and mince 1 clove of garlic.
- 3
Heat 1 tsp of olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.
- 4
Add 4 oz of lean ground beef to the skillet and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for about 5 minutes until browned.
- 5
Add the minced garlic, 1/2 tsp dried oregano, and 1/2 tsp dried basil to the meat. Cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- 6
Pour in 1/2 cup of tomato sauce, 1/4 tsp salt, and 1/8 tsp black pepper. Stir to combine and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 7
Once the water is boiling, add 2 oz of whole wheat spaghetti and cook according to package directions, usually 8-10 minutes for al dente.
- 8
Drain the pasta and add it directly to the meat sauce. Toss to coat the pasta evenly.
- 9
Serve immediately and top with 1 tbsp of grated parmesan cheese.
