Chef's Note
For juicier burgers, avoid pressing down on the patties while cooking as this squeezes out the flavorful juices. If you prefer your burgers more well-done, simply cook for 1-2 minutes longer on each side.

Ingredients
1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
5 buns hamburger buns
5 slices American cheese slices
5 leaves lettuce leaves
1 large tomato
1/2 medium red onion
5 tablespoons ketchup
5 tablespoons mustard
5 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Instructions
- 1
Divide 1.5 pounds of ground beef into 5 equal portions and gently form into patties about 1/2 inch thick and slightly wider than your buns (they'll shrink when cooking).
- 2
Season both sides of each patty with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, distributing evenly among all patties.
- 3
Slice 1 large tomato and 1/2 medium red onion into thin rounds. Wash and dry 5 lettuce leaves.
- 4
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
- 5
Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on the first side until browned.
- 6
Flip the patties and cook for another 2-3 minutes for medium doneness.
- 7
Place 1 slice of American cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking. Cover the pan briefly to help the cheese melt.
- 8
While the cheese is melting, lightly toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or in another pan.
- 9
Spread 1 tablespoon each of mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard on each bun.
- 10
Assemble the burgers by placing each patty on a bottom bun, then topping with lettuce, tomato, and red onion. Add the top bun and serve immediately.
