Chef's Note

For extra juicy burgers, avoid pressing down on the patty while cooking as this squeezes out the flavorful juices. If you prefer your fries extra crispy, you can double-fry them - cook once at a lower temperature, let rest for a few minutes, then fry again at a higher temperature.

Ingredients
  • 4 oz ground chuck

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1 hamburger bun

  • 1 American cheese slice

  • 1 lettuce leaf

  • 1 tomato slice

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tsp mustard

  • 1 medium russet potato

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions
  • 1

Wash the potato and cut into 1/4-inch thick strips. Soak in cold water for 5 minutes, then pat dry with paper towels.

  • 2

Heat 2 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  • 3

Add the potato strips to the skillet in a single layer and cook for 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally until golden brown and crispy. Season with salt to taste and set aside.

  • 4

While the fries are cooking, form the 4 oz of ground chuck into a patty about 1/2-inch thick and slightly larger than your bun (it will shrink when cooking).

  • 5

Season both sides of the patty with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp black pepper.

  • 6

In the same skillet (or a separate one if needed), cook the burger over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes on the first side.

  • 7

Flip the burger and cook for another 2-3 minutes for medium doneness. Place 1 slice of American cheese on top during the last minute of cooking to melt.

  • 8

While the burger cooks, lightly toast the hamburger bun in a toaster or in a dry pan for 1-2 minutes.

  • 9

Spread 1 tbsp ketchup and 1 tsp mustard on the bottom bun, then add the lettuce leaf and tomato slice.

  • 10

Place the cooked cheeseburger on top of the tomato and cover with the top bun.

  • 11

Serve the cheeseburger with the homemade fries on the side.
